Learn about quitting tobacco in free program at Reid June 11 (6-7-2013)
Community members who want to learn more about kicking the tobacco habit are invited to attend “Tobacco 101 and How to Quit,” a special presentation at Reid on Tuesday, June 11. This presentation, part of an ongoing series called Education+Action=Outcomes, will be from noon to 1 p.m. in Reid’s Lingle Auditorium.

When an elderly parent or spouse experiences mental illness, the entire family can be affected. Reid’s newly expanded geropsychiatric program can help, providing help and understanding to patients and their loved ones.

Reid ER doctor recognized by IU School of Medicine students (5-24-2013)
Michael Smith, M.D., a staff physician in the Reid Hospital emergency department, was recently named “Preceptor of the Year” by fourth-year students at Indiana University School of Medicine-Terre Haute. Dr. Smith is one of hundreds of physicians in the state participating in the school’s clinical clerkship program.

Reid nurses honored during annual celebration (5-20-2011)
Reid Hospital recognized 10 nurses during the 2011 Nurses Week Celebration and Nursing Excellence Awards presentation.

Psychiatrist joins Reid staff (7-28-2010)
Mehtab A. Khan, M.D., has joined Reid Hospital & Health Care Services and will support the hospital’s Adult Psychiatric and Geropsychiatric departments.

Pediatrician joins Reid medical staff (7-27-2010)
Heather R. Nichols, M.D., has joined the practice of Pediatric and Internal Medicine at 1434 Chester Blvd., specializing in pediatric medicine.

Physician joins blood disease practice (4-16-2010)
Mutombo Kankonde, M.D., has opened an oncology/hematology practice in the Richmond Cancer and Blood Disease Center, 1050 Reid Parkway, Suite 120. Before opening the practice, he was associated with the Department of Oncology/Hematology, Largo Medical Center in Largo, Maryland.

Ambassador of the Month

June Ambassador has contagious attitude (6-18-2013)
Amber York, Reid’s June Ambassador, has been a Reid team member since 2008. She works in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and has been a charge nurse for the last three years. Amber earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Ivy Tech in 2007 and is working on a bachelor’s degree at Indiana University East. She was recently honored with a 2013 Nurse Excellence Award.

May Ambassador has experience, enthusiasm and empathy (5-3-2013)
Debbie Richardson, Reid’s May Ambassador, has been a Reid team member for over 24 years and a 5-North nurse for 23. Five-North was known as the L-6 nursing unit prior to Reid’s move to 1100 Reid Parkway. Debbie works on the unit as a first shift charge nurse. She earned her ASN degree from Indiana University East in 1989 and her BSN in 2008. She was honored with a Nurse Excellence Award in 2012.

April Ambassador glows with enthusiasm (4-5-2013)
Becky Fisher, Reid’s April Ambassador, has been a Reid team member for over 17 years and a radiology nurse for six. Prior to joining the radiology team, Becky worked for 11 years on L-3 at the 1401 hospital building. She now administers medications to patients and monitors their recovery after radiology procedures such as ultrasound biopsies and MRIs. Co-workers note her enthusiasm for her work and her comforting approach with patients. “Her cheerfulness is a comfort to all who work with her and to the radiology patients for whom she cares,” said a physician. “Becky is caring, compassionate and treats every patient like they are the only patient she is going to have the entire day,” said a team member.

March Ambassador monitors heart of the CCU (3-8-2013)
Ben Bratton, Reid’s March Ambassador, has shared his expertise with Reid for over two years. As a monitor technician on the Critical Care Unit, Ben alerts clinical staff to any changes in a patient’s heart rhythm. Peers note Ben’s positive attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to help wherever needed. “His attitude and enthusiasm are contagious,” said a co-worker. “Ben is always smiling and pleasant. He often will do extra work when he knows the staff nurses on the floor are busy,” said another.

February Ambassador practices what she teaches (2-8-2013)
Shara Short, Reid’s February Ambassador, has shared her smile and nursing expertise for over 30 years. Having served on Reid nursing units for 25 years, Shara joined the Education Department five years ago. She now teaches CPR and VOICE skills and provides orientation to new clinical staff. Shara volunteers for many Reid activities including ReidRide, Shoes for Kids, Relay for Life and the Reid Olympics.

Volunteer of the Month

June volunteer is thorough and conscientious (6-18-2013)
June’s Volunteer of Month, Ed Bowery, has almost eight years of experience at Reid’s information desk and in the emergency department. He is noted for his friendliness, and for the compassion he shows for everyone’s well-being.

May volunteer provides a welcoming smile (5-3-2013)
May’s Volunteer of Month, Marjorie Haisley, has almost 19 years of experience at Reid’s Information Desk. She is noted for her comforting and welcoming smile, and for going above and beyond to assist patients and visitors to their destinations from the Information Desk.

April volunteer a wealth of information (4-5-2013)
April’s Volunteer of Month, Kay Parks, has been a mainstay of the Information Desk for over five years. She is noted for her pleasant personality and for making a great first impression to hospital patients and visitors. Kay also helps with auxiliary fundraising events and aids with computer set up for payroll deductions.

March volunteer has logged over 1,500 hours of service (3-8-2013)
March’s Volunteer of Month, Nancy Clark, has been volunteering in the Medical Education office for over five years. She will soon be recognized for accumulating over 1,500 hours of volunteer service to Reid. Nancy works one or two days a week and primarily enters data for physician continuing medical education credits. She also reviews physician files for documentation needed for various accrediting procedures.

February volunteer registers high marks for great work (2-8-2013)
February’s Volunteer of Month, Diane Taylor, can be found in Reid’s Ginkgo Boutique every Tuesday afternoon. She runs the cash register and stocks the weekly candy order and also enjoys assisting with the Auxiliary’s $6 fundraisers.
